Antique Venetian Mirror Repair

The Restoration of an antique 1850s, Venetian-Style Etched Mirror

We were recently entrusted with a beautiful Venetian-style etched glass mirror dating back to around 1850. When it arrived at the studio, it was in fragile condition—broken into numerous fragments with several original trim pieces missing entirely.

To properly honor workmanship that is nearly 200 years old, this project required a meticulous, patient approach. I carefully disassembled the remaining structure and rebuilt it from the ground up, ensuring the mirror regained its strength while keeping its authentic, original appearance completely intact.

From there, I used traditional hand-beveling and custom cutting techniques to recreate the missing accent pieces and glass trim strips. For the original pieces that were cracked but salvageable, I used a specialized glass epoxy to bond them back together—saving as much of the historic, 19th-century glass as possible.

It took many hours of precision work, but bringing this incredible piece of design history back to life was incredibly rewarding.
